Heading back with the return to Inverness around Luib Summit. Sunday saw the charter heading out and back from Inverness to Wick and Thurso and is seen here slogging up to Lairg Summit 488ft. The final day of the tour saw the train return from Inverness to Kings Cross and is seen here nearing the summit of Slochd at 1315 ft. The hard work almost over before the decent down Glen Garry towards Blair Atholl, seen here reaching the Druimuachdar Summit at 1484 ft.

37515 and 261 stand at Holyhead at lunchtime on 5.11.07 alongside the VT Euston Service led by 57 307 37515 and 20310 set away from Valley on 6.11.07 as the afternoon sun starts to fade. Running slightly later than normal the 'Anglesey Aluminium vans' headed by 37417, stands awaiting a route into Holyhead . Some shots around Holyhead station in some fine Autumnal sunshine. Heading out to Anglesey Aluminium. Following my trip to Holyhead on Saturday morning I set back along the Coast to Llandudno to see Heartlands Rail Tour to Llandudno. After the driver contacted the box clearance was obtained. 47828 and 47813 shortly followed only to be brought to a stand at the signal. After the driver contacted the signal box, clearance was obtained to proceed to the next signal. The train was again brought to a halt to facilitate the un coupling of 47 828. 47828 detached from its train runs into a vacant platform at Llandudno station. 47813 then brought the train into the station. The passengers leave to taken in the town of Llandudno. 47828 stood in the vacant platform until routine Saturday afternoon traffic had arrived and departed and then proceeded to set out of the station and return to couple up onto the rear of the train. 47828 then departed with the train and 47813 on the rear. Having cleared the station 47813 was un coupled and worked back into the station . This then enabled 47828 to set back into the platform it had just vacated. In the final loco move 47813 set back onto the head of the train. The train crew couple the two locos together. The train reassembled and to await departure.

Also of interest just out side Inverness work shops was 8F, 48151 which was to feature on a Far North Line run the following week as part of the RTC Great Britain Charter Tour - more of that later. First off is the Easter Highlander which was originally advertised as a 'Blue Pullman' charter but due to company changes featured a different stock set and different locos. With an 08.05 departure from Inverness 37229 and 47802 run into Dingwall the following morning to await the RETB token for the Kyle Line. Arrival at Garve and time to spare to await the passing of the first train from Kyle enabled train crew and passengers to stretch their legs and take some photos. Taking the climb out of Garve and up to Corriemoillie Summit at 429ft. Skirting Loch a Chuillinn on the approach to Achanalt Viaduct. Crossing Achanalt Viaduct. Pulling away from a slow down at Achanalt and onwards through Strath Bran towards Achnasheen Heading through the expanse of Strath Bran. The relative slow running speed along the Kyle line enables the train to be easily caught up ( within national road speed limits) and passed for the next photo location. Easing into Achnasheen. With both locos working hard the highest summit on the line Luib Summit (646ft) is almost reached. Having reached Luib Summit its then down hill to Glen Carron and Balnacra Crossing where the train is seen heading for Strathcarron station. Awaiting the token for the final leg of the journey to Kyle of Lochalsh. Departing Strath Carron. The scenic setting of Erbusaig Bay Arrival at sunny Kyle. With the passengers away for coach trips to the Isle of Skye the stock is cleaned and tanked and 37 229 is run round to lead the train back in top and tail mode to Inverness. With the train set back 37229 is detached for the run round. 47802 stands at the rear of the return working. 37229 on the front. After standing for a few hours 37229 makes a smokey departure. Easter Sunday saw 47802 lead with 37229 on the back on the way up to Georgemas Junction seen here at Invergordon. Crossing Oykel Viaduct and the Kyle of Sutherland. Approaching Rogart A break at Dunrobin for passengers to tour Dunrobin Castle. Along the Sutherland Coastline near Brora. Arrival at Georgemas Junction. With passengers away on more trips it was time to service the stock.Water was tendered by the Fire service. In order to get 47802 lead on the front for the return working to Inverness it was un coupled and set back into the loop.This enabled 37229 to push the stock onto the Wick line and then un couple so that 47802 could back onto the stock as seen in the following sequence. With the train reformed further servicing was undertaken. Easter Monday saw the Southbound return to London again with 37229 leading. Departure at 08.15 followed the daily service to Kings Cross operated by GNER departing Inverness at 07.55hrs.Time to get a final picture at Culloden. The morning sun highlights the Culloden Viaducts arches. I thought after seeing the Easter Highlander earlier in the day that would be the last 37 passenger train I would see for some time. However a phone call I received in the early evening advised that there was a very good likelihood of a 37 taking the sleeper back to Edinburgh. The North bound 67 hauled service that day had failed with 67007 near Aviemore. 37406 had been assigned as a rescue loco and there was no other available loco to haul the sleeper South. Now I had missed 37422 at Holyhead but I was not going to miss this. 37406 on the Inverness Edinburgh First Scotrail Caledonian Sleeper on Easter Monday.

The 37 meets its replacement again at Holyhead . 175 007 and 37406. With James Bond 007 all the hype at the moment here is 007 at Holyhead. Pulling up the bank out of Holyhead. Making its way up to Lairg Summit An excursion around Dunrobin for the passengers enabled time for this shot to be taken at Dunrobin. Arrival at Georgemas Junction. Passengers made their way to awaiting coaches for planned off-train excursions. Time for 47703 to take charge to Thurso. A first, I believe a 47 at Thurso. Thurso Thurso - another Fire Service assist with stock watering. The train awaits departure at Inverness on Easter Monday with the long trip back to Kings Cross. A few hours later and it was on the trail of the 37 . Here 37417 arrives at Invergordon on the late running Lairg Tanks 37417 heading back to Inverness in April showers. Awaiting the single line RETB token from Muir Of Ord to Inverness. The following day 37417 returns the empties seen here passing through Dingwall.

Sat 10.12.05, 57 314 stands idle at Holyhead where it remained until Monday 12.12.05 first working of the new timetable to Man Pic. An alternative view - on yet another miserable Saturday. Possibly the final RHTT arrived with the train sporting a head board. Loco's involved were 20 301 and 37 611. The train departs to head back along the coast. 47 847 brought a train of empty stock into Holyhead on Wednesday evening to swap over with that which has worked on the Holyhead Man Pic service. 47 847 on the run round. Meanwhile 57308 had brought its stock from Manchester into platform 1.Once detached 47847 backed onto the empty stock to return to Crewe. 57308 stands to await its next turn of duty. A chance visit on the back of a late evening shopping trip on 21 December found 47815 ticking over on platform 3 at Holyhead. Released from stock. The driver receives instructions from the shunter. The loco runs upto the platform signal as the Man Pic loco hauled service comes in and runs into platform 1, The Man Pic loco being 57 313. Prepares to be released. 47815 backs onto the stock. 47815 having left the station 57313 draws slowly up to await clearance to leave platform 1.

Two views taken from the 11th floor of Rail House, showing the station in the weeks leading up to the shutdown. The first view is northwards, the Chester and WCM lines are to the left, whilst the Manchester line diverges right and heads for Sandbach. The Liverpool and Manchester Independent lines can be seen diving under North Junction. The southerly view covers the South Junction and the Diesel Depot, with the Independent lines again at the bottom of the shot. Salop Goods Junction signal box is on the extreme right. Similar views to the two previous ones, but taken after the start of the seven week shutdown. The old North Junction layout has largely disappeared, lifted out by the huge crane seen to the right. An Up Express is passing through on the Liverpool Independent line, whilst a Stafford shuttle service stands outside North Junction box. These trains ran via the Chester Independent lines, which can be seen to the lower right, and reversed into the station. Similar activities are in progress at the southern end of the station. A short time later, down at track level, North Junction is seen devoid of track, but with fresh ballast laid out ready. Turning round, the new track is spreading northwards from the station. For the duration of the work, four Class 40 loco's were reprieved and transferred to departmental stock. Here, 97 408 (40 118) ferries two electric loco's from Crewe Electric Depot on the Chester line, to the yard south of the station, all the overhead wiring in the station area being isolated whilst work was in progress. A little further along the Chester line, several less fortunate members of the class await their fate in Crewe Works. The old Crewe North Junction signal box. The WCML (or rather, where it will be soon) passes in front of the box, which now forms part of the Crewe Heritage Centre. Moving north towards Crewe Coal Yard signal box, an Up express hauled by 87 030 The rear of the train seen in the previous shot descends the gradient to pass underneath North Junction. On the right the Down Independent emerges, the line is covered by protective scaffolding as one of the A Down HST powers up the gradient as it approaches Coal Yard box, running on the Down Liverpool Independent line. One of the Stafford shuttle trains approaches Crewe station, along the Down Chester Independent line. Three more views of the North Junction layout taking shape. The method of installation, prefabrication just off-site and delivery to the required positon by crane, saved an enormous amount of of time. Without this the job just could not have been done in the available 7 week shutdown. The points were assembled complete with operating mechanisms, all set up and tested, and requiring only minor final adjustments once laid into their final positions. Two views, looking south and north, from within the station itself... ... taken from 'four-foot' of the Up Fast. The layout at the south end of the station was not as advanced as at the north end as these two photos show. The first looks into the station, with the The interior of Crewe South Junction signal box after closure. The frame is a WB&SCo Style 'L', containing 227 levers. Very few of these frames are now left in service, though one does survive in the North-West, at Liverpool Lime Street. A section of this particular frame is preserved in working order at the <a href=Great Cockcrow Railway." /> One of the illuminated diagrams. Two identical diagrams were provided due to the extreme length of frame. Parts of the diagram have been covered over as sections of the track layout were taken out of use during 'stageworks' leading up to the main commissioning. A close up of a small section of the lever frame. Behind the miniature levers themselves are the luminous indicators which repeat the condition of points and signals 'on the ground', whilst in front are the nameplates, which describe the function of the lever and also list other levers which must be pulled first to free the locking, a practice carried over from full size mechanical frames. Back at North Junction, the layout is taking shape, with only the Manchester lines to complete. Not all the layout was laid in prefabricated sections. This crossover between the Up and Down Manchester lines was outside the reach of the cranes and so was built up by hand on site. A day later and the crossover nears completion. A view of the station section of the new signalling control panel. The layout is orientated with South Junction at the left. A wider shot of the full panel. Back outside, and with the layout complete the track has been 'boxed in' with ballast and the tampers are at work at North Junction. Looking the other way, OLE engineers are installing the supporting steelwork prior to running out the OLE itself. North Junction is a hive of activity as the completed layout is tamped, OLE installed and points connected up and adjusted. 08 220 with a short ballast train of 'Sealion' hoppers. A Long Welded Rail train running into Platform 6. The 'plain line' through the station, and elsewhere, has been laid in 60' panels using temporary 'service' rails. These will now be replaced with LWR which will be welded to the pointwork at either end. As can be seen, LWR has already been dropped alongside the Up Fast. Included as an interesting comparison with a couple of similar earlier shots, the completed North Junction layout is seen here, with the Manchester lines diverging to the right. To finish with, we have a number views from earlier in the job, taken from the top of the lighting tower next to Crewe North Junction signal box, to which access was 'accidentally' granted for a number of staff, when someone 'forgot' to lock the access gate! Despite not having a particularly good head for heights - Fred Dibnah he is not - the photographer decided this opportunity was too good to miss. Having observed several other staff get part way up and decide The WCML strikes out for Weaver Junction. To the left is one of the material stacking grounds, now virtually empty but for a few sections of scrap track from the old layout, and which now of course is part of the Crewe Heritage Centre site. The Liverpool Independent lines can also be seen, running alongside the main lines, as mentioned previously the Down Independent is hidden by a scaffolding 'umberella'. The Chester line, with Crewe works visible in the distance. A southwards view overlooking North Junction and the station area. A Class 08 shunter brings a train loaded with OLE structure components off the Chester line, probably from the Electric Depot situated opposite Crewe Works, which was also used as a construction depot during the original 1960s electrification scheme. The WCML north is complete, but a gap remains in the two Manchester lines. A telephoto shot of the South end of Crewe. The layout there is now substantially complete, the Alsager line can be seen leaving to the left, whilst the Shrewsbury line swings round towards Gresty Lane box. With the shunt signal pulled 40145 moves off on the run round and a chance for some of the travellers to take some pictures in the drier but cloudier conditions at Holyhead. At the end of the line. ...and from the other angle. ..the other end of the run round and setting back down towards its stock. ...followed by 6233 returning from Valley. Both charters on the trains with 6233 about to depart.40145 eased its stock out of platform 3 upto the box prior to the steam special leaving to enable the next shot. Passing Holyhead box. 6233 climbs the bank out of Holyhead. 40145 draws its stock up to enable it to set back into the carriage servicing sidings. ...and sets back into the servicing area. Following its visit to the new service shed it awaits the passing of 175 003 prior to setting back to collect its stock. 40145 draws out of the sidings . Just prior to departure. What a sound it made passing MP 263 and the old water reservoir.
